Title Research: 47 Meters Down Uncaged

I watched this clip on Hulu.

What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?

The scene started with the production that presents and the production studio. Then it proceed to list the actor's names. Then it showed the casting director, the visual effects supervisor, the music by, hair and makeup artist, costume designer, editor, production designer, director of photography, co-producer, executive producers, producers, writers, and director. The title wasn't shown until about 1 minute after the actual movie started.

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

The images shown are underwater close ups. It is unclear most of the time exactly what the objects are shown but it is obvious it is underwater. Then toward the end there is a cave and it seems the camera is emerging out of it. The final image is of the top of a body of water and a person diving in.

What connotations do these images carry?

The images are eerie. Since they are extremely close up and unclear it creates a sense of mystery. All of the images are dark as well which gives a creepy vibe. The emerging out of a cave looked like coming out of a shark's mouth which was very intense. The final scene left the audience guessing as to why the person was diving in the water.

How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

The whole opening scene was creepy, thrillers have some aspects of creepiness. As well as the darkness, thrillers incorporate a lot of dark scenes to create suspense.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

I think the ending scene really captures the audience's attention because it was out of nowhere and happened very slowly. The diving and dropping of the bag in the water was intense and can appeal to thriller lovers. 47 meters down is known to be similar to Jaws and incorporated the fear of sharks and the scene of coming out of the cage should have made the audience get a glimpse of the shark phobia.

How has technology been used effectively?

The editing of the whole opening scene was in slow-motion. This was used wisely along with a creepy score to make the watcher feel uneasy. Even the title transitions took a while to switch and faded slowly. Dollies were used in every scene to show the setting more as well.
